It has been 30 years after the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a leading film company and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping fans curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

In the teaser reveals the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
