Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
