The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
